US President Donald Trump has ordered the temporary suspension of the Diversity Visa program (green card lottery), following a serious shooting last week at Brown University, where two people were killed.

According to US authorities, the suspected perpetrator, a 48-year-old Portuguese citizen, had entered the United States in 2017 through this program and had obtained a green card. He was found dead on Thursday.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the decision was made at the direction of President Trump, with the aim of reviewing the program's security criteria to ensure that the security of American citizens is not jeopardized.

US authorities also suspect that the same person is involved in the murder of a Portuguese professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a few days before the event at Brown University.

The Diversity Visa program, also known in Albania as the American lottery, gives thousands of citizens from different countries the opportunity to legally immigrate to the U.S. every year. Its suspension is also expected to affect applicants from Albania, who have been part of this program for years.
