After four months of waiting and intense negotiations, a crucial meeting between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected in Scotland today at 5:30 PM.

The meeting will take place at the Turnberry Golf Club, owned by the American president, an unusual location for such an important meeting, but one that signals the signing of an agreement to avoid a trade war.

In the last 48 hours, negotiators from both sides have given assurances to resolve several key points that had remained unresolved. Initially, the points of "disagreement" were around 20, but have now been reduced to just two.

A key point concerned customs tariffs: the EU accepts a 15% tariff on its products, while the US applies tariffs from zero to 4.8% on its goods in the European market.

Recently, two strong signals have calmed Washington...

First, at the summit in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa sent a clear message to Washington: The European Union will not open a special preferential channel with China to replace the US.

Second, the EU has abandoned its plan for a tax on big tech companies, thus moving away from a critical point that worries Trump and the American service sector.

On the other hand, the US has expressed its willingness to reduce customs duties on vehicles to 15% (from 27.5% currently) and on medicines, for which it had previously warned of tariffs of up to 200%.

Some minor issues remain pending, such as tariffs on semiconductors, steel and aluminum, but they are now considered "second-hand".

The EU and the US are also ready to lift tariffs on airplanes and alcoholic beverages, showing a willingness for broad compromise to avoid a dispute with serious economic consequences.

Even though the 15% tariff will affect EU economic growth by about 0.3% over the next two years, Von der Leyen is determined to sign this agreement today in Scotland.

In case of failure, the EU will be forced to activate countermeasures worth 93 billion euros and other instruments, including a tax on big technology companies.
