"It's not me, the big figures of Foggia are looking for me, you're reading the news, everyone is begging me, Pasquale's son-in-law, people from the Trisciuoglio clan... what's happening in Cerignola is truly disgusting."
These are some of the intercepted and published conversations of Albanian 'boss' Shaban Shima, 36, captured the day before, who ran an Albanian-speaking drug trafficking cartel in Italy. Italian media write that Shima, transferred to Foggia, was caught while in a club in the capital discussing drug deals with Rocco Soldo, the son-in-law of the notorious Trisciuoglio-Tolonese clan boss, Raffaele Tolonese, known as "Rafanill".
Investigators say the conversations reveal a high level of criminal activity and links to local mafia circles. This information helped lead to raids and the arrests of 24 people, as well as the discovery of a caged wolf, which was later released and taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
Shima supplied dealers close to the "Società Foggiana" and groups active in Parma and other Italian cities with cocaine and cannabis, selling between 5 and 10 kilograms at a time, with a volume of around 40,000 doses per month and profits reaching up to 200,000 euros.
The investigation was launched by the DDA of Bari, against Anna Tolonese, the sister of Raffaele Tolonese, who was under investigation for the crime of usury and was arrested in September 2024. The crime affected the city of Foggia, the corresponding province and several areas of central and northern Italy, including Emilia-Romagna, Rieti and Molise. Italian, Albanian, Georgian and Romanian citizens were involved in the criminal activities.
Investigating judge Marialuisa Bencivenga, accepting the requests of prosecutor Alessio Marangelli, ordered the imprisonment of 19 people and house arrest for 5 others. In total, 35 people are under investigation. The arrests included, in addition to Shima, Marzio Padalino, Paolo Padalino known as “Uncle”, Alessio Lioce known as “Pupo”, Savino Defazio, Vincenzo Gemma, Massimo Soccio and several Albanian citizens from Parma, Langhirano, Foggia and Rieti, as well as several Romanians, a Georgian woman and a Moldovan woman.
In an intercepted conversation between Shima and a friend of his, connections with the Moretti-Pellegrino-Lanza clan and their allies come to light: You need to set me up with them, with my uncle's daughter, Anna Rita Moretti, Rocco Moretti's daughter.
Shima replies: Brother, I can see that girl whenever I want. I always see my uncle's son-in-law, Pasquale Nardella, Pasquale Moretti's son-in-law.
The investigating judge identifies Shaban Shima as “the driving force behind a vast cocaine trafficking network based in Foggia.” He is suspected of buying the drug in bulk and reselling it at inflated prices, using warehouses, packaging facilities and accurate accounting systems for supplies and income.
According to reports from the Carabinieri, the group used cars with hidden compartments, cryptophones and proven channels to transfer the proceeds to Albania, exploiting bus and truck drivers. This system became clear when 40,000 euros in cash were seized in January at a checkpoint along State Road 16.
One of the significant seizures included 2 kilograms of cocaine from Bolivia, which was found to be 96% pure by carabinieri laboratory analysis.
