Who is the 'dentist', the Albanian who was sentenced to 22 years in
Sajmir Alimehmeti

The Tirana Prosecutor's Office seized assets belonging to the family of Sajmir Alimehmeti, known by the nickname "The Dentist," while in December 2018 he was sentenced by a federal court in Manhattan to 22 years in prison for providing material support to the extremist group Islamic State (ISIS) and for passport fraud.

Alimehmeti had been under surveillance by authorities since 2014, when he was refused entry to Britain on two occasions after attempting to travel to Syria. According to the FBI, he had purchased knives and military equipment and played videos showing an ISIS fighter executing prisoners.

He had also stated that he planned to travel to Syria with his brother, who was subsequently arrested.

In 2015, Alimehmeti had applied for a new American passport, faking its loss and hiding British rejection stamps to avoid suspicion from authorities. In 2018, he pleaded guilty to lying on his passport application and providing material support to ISIS.

Manhattan Judge Paul Engelmayer described Alimehmet as “a ticking time bomb” during his 2018 sentencing, highlighting the security risk he posed. Meanwhile, today, the Tirana prosecutor’s office froze several bank accounts belonging to his family, which the prosecution said did not justify legal sources.
