The National Book and Reading Center organized the ceremony of announcing the winner of the "Lumo Skëndo" Award.
This award serves as a judging institution for the best journalistic, essay or historical work of a year, but not only. It is a good occasion to bring to attention the name of a rare and versatile figure, such as Mid'hat Frashëri.
"Despite all the efforts we are making, prestige has not been restored due to a long denial of this name and this personality. This event has served to celebrate the book and this is important and I believe the names that have deserved it", said Belinda Budini.
The authors selected by the jury for this edition were Ilir Ikonomi, Thomas Frashëri, Ardit Bido, Namir Lapardhaja, Artan Fuga, Natasha Lako, Blendi Fevziu, Migjen Kelmendi, Erion Kristo and Astrit Lulushi, of whom Ilir Ikonomi was selected as the winner with the work "Fan Noli, Apostle".
"It is an important and prestigious award and those who won it before me were well-known figures of literature and philosophy. I am excited. Especially "Lumo Skëndo" is a very popular personality. He was a very active man at a time when not everyone was active" , said Ilir Ikonomi.
While in a post on social networks, Ikonomi writes:
"Today in Tirana, a jury honored me with the prestigious Lumo Skëndo award for the book "Fan Noli - Apostulli". The event was organized by the National Book and Reading Center.
I also said a few words about the acquaintance of Lumo Skëndos (Mid'hat Frashërit) with Fan Noli in the distant year 1921.
Both were knowledgeable people, both worked hard on the biggest problem of that year: the emptying of the Albanian lands by the Serbian and Greek troops, who were not letting the revived Albania breathe.
Mid'hati, 41 years old, represented Albania in Paris; Noli, 39, at the League of Nations in Geneva. Mid'hati was an excellent connoisseur of the Albanian land, of every village, of every inch of land. Noli was a good orator and articulater of Albanian demands, embellished his speeches with Latin expressions, verses from Shakespeare and Dante, he was good at debating with Greek and Serbian diplomats in the League of Nations.
One day they met in Geneva. It was the end of August 1921.
On September 1, the two knocked on the office of Lord Arthur Balfour, the former prime minister of Britain.
-How can I help? - asked the Lord.
- You have great power, - they told him.
The Lord received them kindly, but not without a sense of irony, these two cultured men, who so passionately defended the crippled lands of their country. But it was not easy to break through to the greats.
Mid'hat Frashëri and Fan Noli did not stay together for more than a week in Geneva, but they were there at the right moment. They were probably the only Albanians who really had the ability to defend Albania's borders.
That's why this award I received today reminded me of some things from history. It was very meaningful to me."
The "Lumo Skëndo" award is an important evaluation that highlights the best values of these publications, which have a role in public discussions. For the first time, this prize was awarded in 2021, in which Lea Ypi won.
