"It opened its doors to 400,000 people", BBC writes about Kukësi:
Kukes

The city of Kukes made a splash around the world when in 2000 it became the first city to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This is how the prestigious BBC media begins the article that goes back in time and remembers the time when the city welcomed a staggering number of refugees from Kosovo who were forced to leave because of the war.

With a population of only 16,000 and 20 km from the border, this city experienced world fame for a short time, then later faced a series of crises after the fall of communism.

Once the war in Kosovo ended and the refugees returned home, Kukësi experienced an exodus of its own, as 53% of residents left Albania's poorest city in search of economic opportunities abroad.

But now, as the number of visitors to Albania increases, locals hope that tourism can provide an incentive for the next generation to stay.

With Kukes' new airport under construction, mountain hiking trails and communist relics, residents are turning to their unique history and generosity to lure travelers to one of the lesser-known corners of one of Europe's least-visited countries.

With its colossal mountain peaks and turquoise river waters, it's easy to imagine Kukësi and the surrounding region emerging as a delightful adventure destination.

In the village of Shistavec, a 45-minute drive into the mountains, wooden houses are built for skiers and mountaineers, and on day trips from Kukësi, tourists can learn more about the mountain culture of the Gorans, who speak a Slavic language distinct from Albanian.

Opening the doors to about 400 thousand people, Kukësi showed the world that even in the darkest moments humanity prevails.

Now, residents hope to share their stories of communism and conflict while also spreading their ideals of hospitality and peace./ BBC
