Boxer Goran Gogic's trial in KAOS/New York Post: 3 Albanians attempt to
Goran Gogic in New York

An attempt to corrupt the jury has thrown the federal trial of former heavyweight boxer Goran Gogic in New York into chaos.

According to US authorities, three people linked to Albanian criminal organizations and the Gambino mafia family offered a $100,000 bribe to find Gogic not guilty in his cocaine trafficking trial.

Judge Joan Azrack decided to dismiss the jury, interrupting the trial that began on Monday, just on the first day.

The case, which involves one of the largest cocaine seizures in US history, will resume in 30 days with an anonymous and partially sequestered jury, according to the court's ruling.

Suspects and links to organized crime

The three suspects, Mustaga Fteja, Valmir Krasniqi and Afrim Kupa , were arrested and charged with jury tampering.

According to prosecutors:

Afrim Kupa , 52, was caught on a secret recording offering bribes and has documented ties to the Albanian mafia and the Gambino family.

Valmir Krasniqi , 35, a Kosovar and restaurant manager in Bay Ridge, also has ties to Albanian organized crime.

Mustaga Fteja does not appear to have direct ties to the mafia, but is part of the corruption plan.

According to prosecutors, the three discussed how to pay the bribe inside a house in Staten Island, using English and Albanian.

"How will you pay for it? Who will provide the money?" asked Fteja.

“Money,” replied the Cup.

"Will you give it to me? How much?"

" One, one hundred thousand ," confirmed the Cup.

Details on Gogic's trial

Goran Gogic, 46, born in Montenegro, boxed in Germany from 2001 to 2012, with a record of 21-4-2.

He is accused of trafficking 22 tons of cocaine, worth over $1 billion, from Colombia to Europe via the US.

US authorities say Gogic worked with cocaine suppliers and suspicious crew members on merchant ships.

Three of his shipments were seized by authorities in 2019, including a shipment worth over $1 billion, considered one of the largest seizures in history.

Gogic is being held without parole at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, while prosecutors consider him a dangerous high-level trafficker of the Balkan cartel.

Measures against suspects

The Afrim Cup was held without guarantees.

Valmir Krasniqi was held without bail and denied involvement, saying that the question “Is it done?” referred to the meeting at his home, not the bribe.

Mustaga Fteja was released on a $150,000 bond.

Prosecutors believe there may have been other accomplices in the scheme. All three could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
