The Supreme Court will consider Veliaj's appeal for release from prison on

The Supreme Court will review on May 28 the next appeal of Mayor Erion Veliaj, who requests the change of the security measure 'prison arrest' by replacing it with another, lighter security measure.

Veliaj has been in prison custody since February 10, 2025. SPAK has listed 13 charges against him, such as passive corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and bringing items into prison.

Veliaj's request comes at a time when the Joint Panels of the Supreme Court reviewed a 2011 unifying decision on the measure of securing detention in prison and its duration. The unanimous decision provides that the most severe restriction of personal freedom, the measure of detention in prison, should be taken after other alternative measures have been realistically considered. It also requires a case-by-case justification for the person involved and that the prosecution bears the burden of proof to justify the need for the extreme measure.

Following this decision by the United Colleges, the former director of the Albanian Association of Students, Mirlinda Karçanaj, was granted freedom by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court eased the measure against her, from house arrest to mandatory reporting.

Former President Ilir Meta also requested a lighter security measure just a day ago in the Appeal of the Criminal Court of Kosovo and used the Supreme Court's unifying decision on pre-trial detention as an argument, but the black squads rejected his request.
