A severe heatwave will hit Europe early next week, with temperatures reaching 43°C in France and even 45°C in Spain and Portugal, according to experts at Severe Weather Europe.

The situation in France is already alarming – in some parts of the country temperatures have exceeded 40°C. This is the 50th official heat wave since 1947, but one of the earliest of the summer season. The areas around Toulouse and Marseille are the hardest hit, where warnings of dangerous weather conditions have been issued.

A similar situation is in Spain, Italy and Portugal, where extreme temperatures and an increased risk of forest fires are already being recorded. In Portugal, fires are already active and red weather warnings have been issued.

The cause of these extremes is the so-called heat dome – a meteorological phenomenon that traps heat in the lower layers of the atmosphere. Due to the lack of wind and solar radiation, the temperature is increasing every day.

Health services warn of risks for the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses, while cities like Paris and Madrid are affected by the urban heat island effect, where temperatures do not fall below 25 °C even at night.

According to initial forecasts, a slight drop in temperatures could occur in the second week of July, with a return to a more livable climate. It certainly won't be a cool autumn climate, but it will be a climate less extreme than the current 40 degrees.

Experts predict that such extremes will become more common during the summer, with storms possible as a result of sudden temperature changes. Citizens are advised to be careful, cool down and avoid being in the sun during the hottest part of the day.
