At 1:00 p.m. today, a preliminary hearing is expected to take place at the GJKKO for the former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, on the issue of the Gërdec tragedy.

SPAK demands that Mediu be tried on charges of abuse of office and abuse of office in collaboration with military command staff.

The preliminary session will be led by judge Irena Gjoka, who will decide whether the file will go to trial or will be returned to SPAK for completion of investigations.

The case against former minister Mediu has been reopened after Zamira Durdaj, who lost her son in the Gërdec incident, reported him to SPAK.

Initially, the First Instance of the Special Court dismissed SPAK's request to retry Mediu, with the argument that all the legal deadlines for re-examining the case have passed and that there is no new evidence.

The court reasoned that Mediu's lack of immunity, especially after 2019, did not prevent the prosecution from starting the proceedings.

Mediu was one of those accused of abuse of office for the 2008 event where Albania was shocked by the explosion of a military weapons depot in Gërdec, near Tirana.
