Leonard Farruku, 27 years old, from Manza e Durres was the Albanian who committed suicide on the ship Bibby Stockholm where asylum seekers registered in Britain are kept.
The identity of the victim, who was found dead last week, has been revealed by 'The Telegraph', which writes that the young man paid €4,000 to cross the English Channel in a dinghy, entering Britain illegally last summer.
The Bibby Stockholm has been plagued by problems since it docked in Portland in July, including a number of health and safety issues.
It had to be evacuated in the summer after the discovery of potentially deadly bacteria.
The boat is one of three major migrant accommodation sites designed to reduce the £8 million a day cost of housing asylum seekers in hotels.
So what is Bibby Stockholm?
The Bibby Stockolm is a non-motorized barge, accommodation vessel owned by Bibby Line shipping and marine operations company.
The ship was built in 1976 and flies the flag of Barbados. She was converted into an accommodation barge in 1992. She was previously known as Floatel Stockholm and Dino
From 1994 to 1998, it was used to house the homeless, including some asylum seekers, in Hamburg, Germany.
In 2005, it began to be used by the Netherlands to detain asylum seekers in Rotterdam.
In August 2017, there was a discussion by a property management company about leasing the barge to provide university accommodation to 400 students in Galway, Ireland, along with Bibby Bergen.
However, the plan was generally not workable. In June 2018, the barge moved to Piteå, Sweden, to help build the Markbygden Wind Farm.
She remained there until at least 2019. In April 2023, the UK Government announced plans to use the barge to house asylum seekers at Portland Port in Dorset.
