NATO has brought a team to Tirana to increase the security of internal systems, after the latest cyber attacks that are suspected to have come from Iran.
The visit comes after Prime Minister Edi Rama's communication with the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg. The delegation headed by the deputy assistant to the Secretary General of NATO for challenges and safe development Mr. James Appathurai first met with Defense Minister Niko Peleshi.
In a press statement with the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, James Appathurai, the Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi stated that the security and defense systems were not affected by the attack because they are disconnected from the general communication and information network. .
"Our allies strongly condemned the attacks and came to Albania's side through various statements and assistance in the cyber field. After 5 weeks of intensive work, it has become possible to return the systems to the service of the citizens of our country.
These attacks have shown that we cannot be permanently protected, but that we must be vigilant by investing more in cyber war. Numerous investments have been made these years, but this is a new war after the Russian aggression in Ukraine, which has upset the balance and changed the security scheme. As for security and defense systems, they were unaffected by the attack because they are disconnected and are not in the general communication and information network. However, we have increased the defense system.
I want to thank the alliance for the statement made in support of our country and assistance to prevent future cyber attacks. The visit of today's team is proof of the solidarity and immediate response of the alliance we are a part of, NATO. Being one of NATO's allies makes us safe. It needs attention and more vigilance from everyone. We will do our part supported by our allies" , said Peleshi.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Assistant Secretary General of NATO for challenges and secure development, James Appathurai, guaranteed the technical assistance that will be given to our country to build a defense network against cyber attacks.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary said that they will also see "the long-term needs that Albania needs to build a defense network against these cyber attacks, and Albania is taking steps forward in this area. Due to the fact of attacks on a large scale and for a long time that have been made in the direction of a NATO country such as Albania, you can be sure of the practical defense of the alliance", he said.
