At the end of the year, the director of the Eurasia sector of the Voice of America, Dr. Elez Biberaj retires, ending his 43-year career in journalism. For more than four decades, in various roles, the journalist Biberaj was at the service of the truth and the protection of values that have made the Voice of America one of the most reliable news agencies in the world.

Dr. Elez Biberaj started his career as a radio journalist at the Voice of America in the Albanian service, during the years 1980-1982.

He then became a Senior Editor specializing in Soviet and East European Affairs in the press office of the United States Information Agency, USIA.

From 1986 to 2004, Dr. Biberaj directed the Albanian service of the Voice of America. From 2005 until now, he is the director of the Eurasia Directorate. For 6 months, from June to December 2020, in one of the most challenging moments for VOA, he served as acting director of VOA.

For more than four decades, in various roles, he served the truth and defended the values that have made VOA one of the most influential news agencies in the world.

His career spans six American administrations and he has witnessed some of the most important events, from the Cold War, to the fall of communism, the birth of democracy in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, the Balkan wars, independence of Kosovo, the integration of Eastern Europe into the Euro-Atlantic institutions, Russia's transition to an authoritarian regime, and most recently Moscow's attack on Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

During a speech at the ceremony organized by the Voice of America in honor of his retirement. Dr. Biberaj expressed his gratitude to the agency to which he dedicated his career.

"VOA's mission has been at the center of my professional life from the first day I joined VOA in December 1980. I fell in love with this extraordinary news organization, its commitment to high standards of journalism, its delivery of truth and the spread of American democratic values", said Dr. Pepper.

Voice of America acting director John Lipman praised the way Dr. Biberaj managed the difficult situation and the pressure facing the Voice of America in 2020 during the administration of Former President Donald Trump, when Dr. Biberaj was acting director.

The former US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Reeker, former US ambassador to North Macedonia, highlighted a case during the war in Kosovo.

“Elezi cares about his journalists, including field correspondents who were often under threat for their reporting. I remember, during the war in Kosovo, Elezi asked the leader of the Macedonian service to help a correspondent of the Albanian service and his family who were stuck at the border of Kosovo with Macedonia, under the threat of being arrested and having all his work destroyed by Serbian forces at the time. Together with the Embassy in Skopje, we engaged to contact the responsible officials. The correspondent and his family were allowed to enter the border and reached a safe place. This would not have been possible without Elez's help," said Mr. Reeker.

Leaving after 43 years is not easy for Dr. Pepper. He expressed his conviction that the new generations of the Voice of America will continue the work so that this agency maintains the great influence it has on audiences around the world, through independent and fact-based news.

“I have to admit that it's not easy to say goodbye to such wonderful colleagues and such a great news organization. But, I am leaving with deep pride and a great appreciation for all that we have achieved. I am sure that the Voice of America will continue to be a source of hope and a beacon of truth for millions of people," said Mr. Biberaj.
