The deputy of the Democratic Party, Ina Zhupa, has proposed some changes to the Penal Code to sanction heavier punishments for people who threaten and hit journalists when they are on duty.
According to this proposal, in Article 237 of the Criminal Code, "Assaults due to duty", it is stated that when this happens to a journalist, the punishment for the perpetrator should be up to five years in prison.
"When this offense is committed against a journalist, operator, photojournalist or media worker, due to his activity and when the person's qualities are visible or known, he is punished with imprisonment from one to five years", the text of the draft law states. .
An increase in punishment is also foreseen for threatening journalists due to their duty. " When this offense is committed against a journalist, operator, photojournalist or media worker, due to his activity and when the person's qualities are visible or known, he is punished with imprisonment from one to three years" .
According to the democratic deputy, "the problem of media freedom in Albania continues to remain worrying. In recent years, there have been many journalists who have left for Western countries seeking asylum there, and there have also been cases of violence, pressure and threats due to the duties performed against journalists.
In the conditions where the current criminal legislation has not provided for journalists and media workers any other type of protection than that of ordinary citizens of the country, as well as in the conditions where the cases of pressure, threats or physical violence against journalists due to their duties have increased significantly , we are convinced that this initiative comes in time.
Through this initiative, nothing more is being sought than to equalize the level of protection of journalists and media workers, with that of doctors or police officers".
