The President of the Albanian Bar Association, Maks Haxhia, emphasized during a media statement that " the new Criminal Code is repressive."

He stressed that no one "knows who was on the team of experts who presented this Code."

Haxhia stated that the proposed Code has "confused, disorganized and unoriented provisions."

"Articles have been made that are unacceptable and are extremely discriminatory, which contradict the principles of the Chamber of Advocates. Those who drafted this law do not know the legal profession. If they know the legal profession, it would be a shame for them, because there are four pillars that are not an invention of Albanian law, but were brought from international legislation," Haxhia declared.

He added that the reasoning that this code is being made due to Albania's commitment to membership in the European Union is not convincing.

"Such a code, which is burdened with unclear provisions, excessive penalties and difficult techniques, I do not believe will be accepted by Europe. To make a new code, all justice actors must be involved, as the criminal code cannot be repaired in this way ," he said.

He announced that the National Chamber of Advocates will work intensively during August to prepare a technical position that will be presented to political forces and the Laws Committee, in order to prevent this draft code from passing through Parliament.

"We will send it to the Chamber of Advocates in the EU and, if necessary, we will challenge it in the Constitutional Court, although we hope it will not reach that point. This project is scandalous and needs to be reviewed by lawyers," concluded Maks Haxhia.
