The reasons why Romania claims to return property to Saranda
Sarande

Between 1934 and 1939, Romania had a land on the Ionian Sea, in Saranda. King Zogu had donated the land to Nicolae Iorga, as a sign of gratitude for his contribution to the history and independence of Albania, as well as to the fate of the Balkans.

The historian then donated 50 percent of the area to the Romanian state and thus Romania gained access to the Mediterranean Sea, via the Ionian Sea. The Romanian Institute in Saranda (Casa Iorga) bore the name of the founder from its beginnings. The house was built in 1937 on a plot of almost 1 thousand square meters in the coastal city.

The story was written as a result of the courses that Professor Iorga held at the University of Bucharest and which were used as documentary material by the Albanian delegation at the London Peace Conference in 1919, where he supported the cause of independence and the recognition of the international plan of Albania and the borders of her. Iorga gave that land to the Romanian state in 1934, with the condition that a building be built there to serve as an institute for archaeological studies and research.

Under the concession, such an institute was founded in 1937, which operated between 1937 and 1940, then again between 1942 and 1944. The institute building was designed by the Romanian architect Petre Antonescu. The Romanian concession was obtained from Romania through "soft power" and, therefore, elements of the Romanian Armed Forces were never deployed in the area. The territory was finally occupied by Italy, along with all of Albania, in April 1939.

This topic was addressed again recently in the bilateral discussions between the two countries, underlining the importance of the quick completion of the retrocession process of the Iorga House in Saranda, the property of the Romanian state nationalized after the establishment of the communist regime and sold by the Albanian authorities to private persons after the fall of the totalitarian regime in 1992. Parallel to the administrative and jurisdictional steps, the issue of recovering the building was raised by the Romanian side during several bilateral meetings, including at the highest level, with the request for the implementation of the decisions of the Albanian courts.

At the level of bilateral political dialogue, in some cases guarantees were given that the situation of this building will be resolved in accordance with the decisions of the Albanian justice system. These statements have remained without concrete effects, where the main problem is compensation for the buyer who bought the object in 1992. In November 2016, the Romanian Institute of Culture unveiled in Sarandë the bust of the great Romanian historian and politician Nicolae Iorga, a work made by sculptors of Armenian origin Zisa Musha and Mario Musha.

"It is about the return of a historical symbol of an agreement between Romania and Albania that proves that King Zog, as a sign of gratitude, offered an excellent Romanian. Do you have any information about this return of property", said Corlatean./Albanian Post
