Complaints, statements, and perhaps even testimony, have raised the issue of the treatment of prisoners or detainees to another level recently.
The recent increase in complaints about improper treatment in prisons has come from well-known figures, and this has led to attention being drawn even to people who have not had a public status.
A few days ago, the Ombudsman launched an investigation into the treatment of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj during his detention. The investigations focused on his escort from the detention facility in Durrës to a private clinic, where he underwent several medical tests.
Yesterday it was reported that the Ombudsman, Erinda Ballanca, together with the Commissioner for the Prevention of Torture, conducted a visit to detention cells 313. They held a meeting with the president of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, where they heard the allegations raised by him regarding the manner of arrest.
Meanwhile today, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, after leaving the SPAK premises, commented on the investigations launched by the People's Advocate for the treatment of Mayor Erion Veliaj and PL leader Ilir Meta in the cell. Berisha said that Meta's case is unimaginable, because three family members go, a sister with her children, and one of the children is told, no, only three are allowed. He added that they behaved in the most unacceptable way with Veliaj.
"What was the need to write statuses that Olsi Dado is such and such, and Altin Dumani is the hero as Edi Rama wanted, at a time when he was immersed. You saw for yourself that money was falling from the sky to Velica, with companies like these. What was the need to do this? I tell you, there was a need because Edi Rama wanted to anger the judges and prosecutors with him and keep him where he is. This for me is very condemnable, because this constitutes a criminal offense in itself," said Berisha.
He also said that it is said that Veliaj was mistreated. According to Berisha, during his visit to the detention center, Ulsi Manja was accompanied by a businessman.
The chief democrat said that all the evidence is that the businessman was the main representative of the 'Troplini' clan, " whom they take to give him an ultimatum that, if he speaks, this is what the wife suffers, this is what the child suffers, this is what the grandmother suffers, this is what the grandfather suffers and so on."
"They have behaved in the most unacceptable way with Erion Veliaj. And be assured, I have the worst consideration for Erion Veliaj. I tell you here. I can talk for a long, long time and I don't know any human wickedness like that, except for Edi Rama. But now it is what it is, but his rights cannot be determined by my will. His rights are the rights of a citizen guaranteed by law and the constitution....
The second, it is said that they mistreated him. Ulsi Manja's visit. On this visit, Ulsi Manja was accompanied by a businessman. All the information is that the businessman was the main representative of the 'Troplini' clan, who are leading them, they have also sent others to give him an ultimatum that, if he speaks, this is what the wife suffers, this is what the child suffers, this is what the grandmother suffers, this is what the grandfather suffers and so on. This is also an absolutely unacceptable and condemnable act. I stand by these and I am glad that the Ombudsman has been and is being dealt with", said Berisha.
On the other hand, complaints have not been lacking from Italian businessman Davide Pecorelli, imprisoned in prison 313 in Tirana.
He has ended his hunger strike that he began on July 16. Pecorelli said that during this time he has lost 6 kilograms. His hunger strike is based on the failure to provide, over two months after his arrest, the reasoning behind the court decision, which prevents him from appealing.
In the letter denouncing his isolation conditions and announcing the start of the hunger strike, he stated that he lives in a 16 m² cell with 8 other people, without running water and with rats in the toilet.
Ermir Ndrejaj is one of the 4 arrested who were placed in handcuffs after the operation conducted by the police a week ago on the orders of SPAK.
Ndrejaj was handcuffed along with brothers Artur and Ervin Hoxhosman after the interception of communications at SKYECC.
Regarding him, it is reported that he suffers from leukemia and this can be considered one of the cases where staying in prison could endanger the individual's life.
