In the hectic regional competition, Albania has failed to shine during the last decades. Facts and statistics have almost always ranked it at the bottom.
Per capita income in 2021 was 32% of the European average, leaving behind only Kosovo, with an improvement of only one percentage point compared to the previous year.
For example, for North Macedonia, the indicator improved from 38% of the EU average to 42% for the same period.
For Serbia, the indicator is 44%, for Montenegro, 48% (from 45% in 2020). Even Bosnia-Herzegovina ranks ahead of Albania, with 33% of the EU average.
Even in the other indicator, that of Individual Consumption per Breath (AIC), which measures consumption according to purchasing power parity and price level, Albania ranks last, with 39% of the European Union average, the same as last year and much lower than the average of 48% of candidate countries (excluding Turkey).
Even in the competition to attract investments, Albania has often lost. The Global Opportunities Index 2023 ranked Albania as the least attractive country in the region in terms of the opportunities that investors see to invest.
North Macedonia and Serbia have managed to attract companies, which have brought value-added investments and knowledge. While North Macedonia has also competed with free zones and lower taxes (Albania increased tax revenue from 2014).
Serbia, which has similar taxes to us, has managed to attract investments especially in information technology. According to a government guide to the information and technology (ICT) sector, Serbia now generates 10% of its GDP from the ICT sector, being among the top four export sectors, along with steel, cars and agriculture .
Ironically, this action of the prime minister, the Albanian government and the vote in the Assembly looks like an inverse reflection of a popular expression: A mouse became pregnant (the salary of the "child") and the chicken a mountain (the salaries of the state dome).
In the end, the whole wage debate, the pressure on business as the main culprits that the labor force is emigrating, or all the populism during the campaign on this topic, as always, produced the opposite of what was expected. Maybe we should be calm about one thing, the deputies and the high dome of the state, at least, will no longer have a reason to emigrate./Monitor
