Vlora commemorates today one of the most painful events in its democratic history, the Otranto Tragedy that took the lives of 83 children, men and women who set off from the Ionian coast towards Italy for a better life.

The riots of '97 forced them to leave Vlora, but an incident in the Strait of Otranto with the Italian warship "Sibilla" caused the sinking of the Albanian ship with immigrants on board.

Today, a memorial ceremony was held in the coastal city of Vlora, attended by Mayor Bruna Mersini, Deputy Minister Megi Fino, MP Ardit Bido, and Minister Erjona Ismaili.

During the song of mourning for the 83 lives lost in the sea, Minister Erjona Ismaili was seen in tears, almost sobbing, while another person stood next to her and tried to calm her down.

The images were published by the "Dissidents" page and there are dozens of commenters who still remember that day and share the sad memories, when all of Vlora was covered in a dark silence until the news of the tragic event at sea was announced.

The ship is thought to have had 142 people on board and 83 of them lost their lives.
