Exactly 20 years ago today, the biggest robbery in the history of Great Britain took place, with two Albanians as protagonists.

A total of 53 million pounds were stolen in the Kent area in southern England, of which 32 million were never found.

Two young men from Tropoja, Jetmir Bucpapa and Ermir Hysenaj, both immigrants to the island state, played an important role in this robbery of the cash deposit belonging to the Bank of England. After their arrest a few weeks after the robbery and then at the Old Baily Magistrates' Court, the roles of the two Albanians were learned.

According to the prosecutor in this case, whose statements are referred to by Top Channel , Ermir Hysenaj was employed in the warehouse where the money was organized and prepared to be taken to the bank machines. He was called during the trial as an "inside man" of the group that carried out the robbery, assessed by the judge in the case as "carried out with military discipline."

Hysenaj filmed the entrances, exits and alarm systems of the warehouse with a hidden camera. A map written by him with data on the warehouse's layout was also found. The data was passed on to his fellow countryman from Tropoja, Jetmir Bucpapa, who worked as a security guard in nightclubs in the Kent area and had connections with powerful people in organized crime in this area.

After a months-long trial, Bucpapa and Hysnaj were found guilty. After serving their sentences, both were deported to Albania. In the trial, Jetmir Bucpapa was also accused of participating in the hostage-taking of warehouse manager Colin Dixon. Wearing masks and wielding firearms, including a Skorpion assault rifle and at least one shotgun, the seven robbers tied up the terrified warehouse employees before locking them in cash cages.

The gang kidnapped the warehouse manager, Colin Dixon, as he was on his way to work — while his wife and son were kidnapped separately at the family home — in the hours leading up to the robbery. After a trial in 2007, Stuart Royle, Roger Coutts, Lea Rusha and Jetmir Bucpapa were all sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in the robbery. Emir Hysenaj, who had filmed the warehouse layout with a hidden camera while working there, was also sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Hysenaj, who was living in East Sussex at the time of his conviction, had started working at the warehouse two months before the robbery and the court was told he had been linked to the gang through another Albanian, Bucpapa. Gang members Lee “Lightning” Murray, a mixed martial arts fighter regarded as a “big boss”, and his close friend Paul Allen, tried to escape to Morocco.

Detective Superintendent Gavin Moss, Head of Serious Crime at Kent Police, said: “Although the 2006 Securitas robbery is not currently an active investigation, it remains under regular review and we continue to appeal to anyone with information to come forward.”

"In the 20 years since the crime was committed, we have conducted investigations around the world, both to identify those responsible and to recover the remaining money that was stolen, and we will continue to act on any new evidence that may emerge in the future."

"With the passage of time since the incident, it is clear that a large portion of the remaining money is now untraceable however we are continuing to explore opportunities through the Proceeds of Crime Act to seize assets from the individuals involved."
