10 thousand pounds just for the translator. A high number to put behind bars an Albanian who is accused of distributing cocaine. The Daily Mail writes that Martin Ndreca, 24, pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking last week, but this only came after British authorities spent a huge public fund just to translate thousands of the texts of his messages.
Despite advice from his defense team, Ndreca had ignored it and refused to "face" the situation in which he found himself. Although Ndreca has pleaded guilty, he still refuses to plead guilty to all of his criminal offences, meaning there will still be public money to be spent on his trial in May before he is sentenced.
"There has been an extraordinary waste of public money because a defendant does not face up to his situation," said Judge Ian Lawrie.
Prosecutor Daniel White said that Ndreca already accepts the vast majority of the case. But according to the same, Ndreca has presented the admission opposing the case of the prosecution regarding the level of his involvement in the drug gang where he worked. White said that the court cannot accept the claims of the Albanian that he had a low role. For this reason, it is expected that the Albanian will appear in another trial where the judge will hear the evidence to determine the level of his involvement.
"Because of the way Ndreca behaved in this case, a large amount of money was wasted. "Over 10,000 Pounds paid to Albanian translators who have seen thousands of his text messages," said the prosecutor.
According to figures published by the Daily Mail, the amount of British taxpayers' money used to provide Albanian interpreters for suspected criminals has doubled over the past 5 years.
The Ministry of Justice revealed that £1.2m was spent in 2022 to provide staff to communicate with Albanians accused of crimes in the UK. This is a 35% increase on the previous year and double the amount recorded 6 years ago where around £500,000 was given.
