A serious and unprecedented event for the prison system in Albania happened today in the high security prison in Peqin.
One of the prisoners, suspected Sokol Mjacaj, managed to secure a pistol-type firearm which he used to kill another prisoner, Arben Lleshi, and wounding Indrit Shaqjan.
It is suspected that during the event there was also a hostage taking of the prison staff, as it was reported that the prison cook was held hostage.
In advance, it is suspected that Mjacaj was ordered to kill Arben Lleshi. While the firearm is thought to have been introduced by drone. However, the exact details still remain unclear as the information coming out of the prison is very limited.
The question that arises now is: Should the director general of prisons, Admir Abrija, resign after this spectacular failure of security in prisons?
The tragic event ended with 1 victim and 2 injured, while the prison directorate tried to hide it as an event, not releasing information to the public.
